Everyday Protection - Heres Why its Important
Share
If you've ever read modern & traditional text/grimoires, studied folk magic or explored modern witchcraft, you'll notice something often, Protection almost always comes first.
Long before practitioners focused on attracting love, prosperity or success, they were creating sacred space, cleansing themselves and establishing energetic boundaries. Protection wasn't considered an optional extra it was considered good energetic hygiene.
British occultist Dion Fortune, whose 1930 book Psychic Self Defense is still regarded as one of the foundational texts on energetic protection, he wrote "We live in the midst of invisible forces whose effects alone we perceive." Through this text Fortune means that people are often affected by influences they cannot physically see or immediately identify. Within her occult worldview, these invisible forces included psychic energy, thought forms, emotional projections and spiritual influences operating beyond the ordinary senses. We may not witness the force itself, but we notice its effects like a sudden change in mood, an uneasy atmosphere, unexplained exhaustion or the feeling of being influenced by a person or place. In the surrounding passage, Fortune describes these forces as belonging to a nonphysical side of existence that can still leave an imprint on everyday life.
Whether you interpret those invisible forces as spiritual energies, emotions, collective stress or the psychological impact of the people and environments around you, the principle remains relevant today. Every interaction leaves an impression. You walk into a tense workplace and your shoulders tighten. You spend ten minutes scrolling social media and suddenly feel anxious or inadequate. You leave a conversation feeling completely drained without understanding why. Protection rituals invite us to pause before those experiences accumulate. Rather than waiting until we feel overwhelmed, they encourage us to consciously strengthen our own centre first. In many ways, protection is less about keeping the world out and more about staying connected to yourself while moving through it.
What Does Protection Actually Mean?
When people hear the phrase protection magick, they sometimes imagine defending themselves against hexes, curses, the evil eye or deliberate psychic attack. These are genuine concerns within many magical and folk traditions, and they should not be dismissed. However, protection also has quieter and more nuanced layers. Your emotional boundaries, mental wellbeing, physical energy and the atmosphere of your home all form part of your protective foundation. When those foundations are already unstable, you easily become more susceptible to unwanted spiritual influence. Exhaustion, emotional distress, poor boundaries and an energetically stagnant home can leave you feeling exposed, making it easier for outside energy, whether intentional or unintentional, to take hold. This is why ongoing protection matters. It is not only about responding once something has gone wrong. It is about keeping your foundations strong enough that harmful energy has less space to enter in the first place.
Protection can mean staying grounded when emotions are running high, remaining centred around difficult personalities and refusing to absorb every opinion, criticism or expectation placed upon you. It can also mean cleansing your home, reinforcing wards, tending to your emotional health and regularly checking that your energy still feels like your own. Hexes, curses and the evil eye may be the more obvious forms of spiritual interference, but protection begins long before they reach you. A strong foundation does not make you untouchable but it can make you far less vulnerable.
And that is exactly why our Protection Balm has become the number one best seller at Witchy Worx. Practitioners understand that protection work is not something reserved for emergencies. It is a foundational practice that should be tended to regularly, just like cleansing, grounding and maintaining your wards.
I am also a firm believer that not every intention requires a dramatic ritual. Magick does not always need to involve a full altar, multiple candles or hours of preparation. Sometimes something as simple as applying an ointment to the body with clear intention can be enough to reinforce your boundaries and remind your energy where it belongs & that your body is and will always be the true altar.
Protection balm turns an ordinary daily action into a small act of ritual. It can be applied before leaving the house, entering a crowded environment, beginning spellwork or dealing with people and situations that tend to leave you feeling depleted. It is subtle, practical and easy to carry with you, allowing protection work to become part of your everyday routine rather than something you only remember once you already feel affected.
That is what makes this balm so loved. It offers a simple way to practice consistent protection without overcomplicating it. You warm a small amount between your fingers, apply it with intention and move through your day knowing you have taken a moment to strengthen your foundations.
How to Use a Protection Balm
There isn't one "correct" way to use a protection balm. Some people use it every morning before work, while others save it for times when they know they'll be entering difficult environments. Common places to apply include wrists and pulse points, behind the ears, the back of the neck, the soles of the feet before leaving the house or around the temples. Likewise to anointing yourself you can dab a small amount to threshold doors, windows, mirrors and talismans.
As you apply the balm, take a slow breath and set a simple intention. You don't need an elaborate incantation.
Something as simple as: "May I move through today protected, grounded and untouched by energies that are not my own."
This is more than enough.
Simple Daily Protection Ritual - Each morning, warm a small amount of balm between your fingertips. Apply it to your pulse points while visualising yourself surrounded by bright protective light. Imagine anything that isn't aligned with your wellbeing simply passing around you rather than attaching itself to you.
Take a deep breath.
That's it!! Protection doesn't need to be complicated, i cant stress that enough. The consistency of the practice is often more valuable than performing an elaborate ritual once every few months.
Although you can use your balm whenever you like, many practitioners including myself enjoy aligning rituals with planetary timing or lunar phases too.
You might choose to use it:
- Before work or uni.
- Before entering crowded spaces.
- Before divination or spirit work.
- Before important meetings or difficult conversations.
- Before travelling.
- After spending time around emotionally draining people.
- After scrolling social media if you're feeling energetically depleted.
- During the Waning Moon to assist with clearing and protection.
- On Saturdays, the planetary day traditionally associated with Saturn and boundaries.
Of course, the best time is ultimately the time you'll actually remember to use it.
A little Witchy Worx secret that you may not know!
Our balms are completely lip friendly. Applying a small amount to your lips can become its own protective practice. In many magical traditions, speech carries power. The words we speak can bless, comfort, encourage, manifest and influence the world around us.By intentionally anointing your lips, you're setting an intention that your words remain protected, truthful and aligned with your highest good.
Protection is often misunderstood as a practice rooted in fear, as though protecting yourself means expecting danger at every turn. In reality, protection is about moving through the world with greater confidence, stronger boundaries and a deeper sense of security in your own energy. It's about remembering that your energy deserves the same care as your physical wellbeing.
Whether you're completely new to witchcraft or looking for a mindful daily ritual, our Protection Balm was created to make energetic protection something accessible, practical and easy to incorporate into everyday life. At Witchy Worx, we don't believe protection should be reserved for elaborate rituals or special occasions. We believe it belongs in the small moments. Magic doesn't have to be complicated to be meaningful and often the most powerful form of protection is simply remembering to return to yourself, every single day.
