The Significance Between Flies & The Evil Eye

This has happened to me many, many times over the years. Usually it’s subtle, easy to Banish and easy to brush off.

One experience in particular stuck with me. Sometime in 2023 (i think) it was winter. I had verbally cut off a relative, i quite literally kicked them out of my house. There had been ongoing drama, trauma, crossed boundaries and a lot of emotional interference. That day, I verbally said to them in my lounge room, with full conviction, no more you need to leave NOW. They no longer had access to my home, my time, or my life. Obviously they didn't receive it well (as people with vampiric energy usually don't).

The next morning, I stepped outside my front door and looked up. Above the doorway, clustered tightly together, were around twenty to thirty flies. No exaggeration, they were just sitting there. I immediately assumed an animal must have died i've literally never seen flies perform like that. I checked for anything decaying and found nothing, my bins were empty. There was no food source or smell. Nothing that made sense.

The strangest part wasn’t even the number of flies. It was that they would not move. I swatted and tried to scare them off and they barely shifted, not even a few steps to the side. They stayed clustered in that exact spot above my front door.

Later, I researched fly behaviour and learned that flies slow down significantly in colder weather, which explained why they weren’t moving like AT ALL, but it still didn’t explain why sooo many were gathered in that one specific place with no physical attractant.

My mind immediately goes esoteric in situations like this, and within minutes I understood it as a symbolic expression of the evil eye. This was because I had pissed off and verbally banished this person from my home. But i didn't banish them from energetic field. My home was warded and my boundary was spoken but the interference was still trying to reach the threshold & me. The flies weren’t inside but they were gathered at the point of entry. Symbolically, it made perfect sense to me.

Anyway, i had to do a cord cutting & banishing, I upped the household protection during that period, I lathered evil eye repellant and the matter dissolved, but i still think about the way those flies sat together the way they did, it seriously repulsed me. (SIDE NOTE: i was already under the gaze of evil eye with this person in my proximity & i knew this. I was constantly cleansing and warding with them in my presence, but ill save all that for another blog)

That moment made me realise how often people notice signs like this without understanding what they’re actually responding to. The evil eye isn’t about fear or superstition, it’s about attention and energetic interference. flies do not carry the evil eye, they are not evil. But they can be a symbolic representation that somebody is sending evil eye your way.

What the evil eye actually is

The evil eye is not always intentional, most of the time, it isn’t. At its core, the evil eye is harm caused by attention.

That attention can come from

- Envy & comparison

- Gossip

- Admiration mixed with resentment

- Someone thinking or speaking about you heavily

 - Someone projecting frustration, lack, or judgment

A person does not need to “believe” in the evil eye to send it. They don’t need to be spiritual and they don’t need to consciously wish harm.

This is why evil eye often shows up after boundary setting, cutting people off, a glow up or a win , a new relationship & increased visibility. 

So why flies?

Flies aren’t evil. But symbolically they are incredibly loud. In the physical world, flies gather where something is disturbed, exposed or decaying. Spiritually that behaviour becomes symbolic of energetic disturbance.

Flies represent

- Boundary breaches

- Energetic contamination

- Something unwanted trying to enter

- Small disturbances that multiply if ignored

That’s why, across folk magic and household witchcraft, flies have long been read as indicators that something has gotten in or is trying to. In my experience, and in many others, flies often show up around thresholds when boundaries are being challenged.

Who can send the evil eye?

Most people assume it comes from enemies and sure it definitely does! but more common than not it easily sources back to the people that are in your inner circle. Most commonly, family, friends and coworkers. Along side Ex's, acquaintances, people who feel rejected, people who feel left behind and people who feel entitled to access.

When flies are more than just flies

Not every fly is a sign. Especially not in Australia & especially not in summer. But patterns matter. Pay attention if They appear suddenly. There’s no clear physical cause. They gather repeatedly in one area. They show up after conflict or boundary setting. They coincide with feeling drained, irritable or “off”. Persistent, clustered flies with no source are what you should start questioning.

Location matters: where are they showing up?

At the front door - Outside attention. People trying to access you energetically. Boundary challenges.

At windows - Visibility, perception, being watched or discussed. Common after posting online or being talked about.

In the kitchen - Money, nourishment, stability. Often shows up when stress or outside opinions are impacting your sense of safety.

In the bedroom - Rest, intimacy, vulnerability. Emotional exhaustion or energetic overstimulation.

Near altars or spiritual items - Attention drawn to your spiritual work. Cleanse and reinforce boundaries.

We live in Australia. Heat brings flies! So always rule out, bins, drains, pet food, compost etc.

What to do if it feels like evil eye or negativity

1. Cleanse the space. Smoke, sound, water or intention. Check your wards and refresh them. Cleanse evil eye talismans “Anything not meant for me or this home leaves now."
2. Once thats done then look at cleansing yourself. Shower, bathe, use a scrub, use salt, incorporate herbs that cleanse, smoke cleanse, do what suits you best & what you're called to.
3. Reinforce boundaries & protection. Ward your home, ward your name, protect yourself and your threshold, Evil eye is deflected, not fought.

Useful protection practices are

- Protective floor washes.

- Salt the threshold (doors, windows).

- Protective herbs - rue, basil, rosemary, agrimony, juniper, angelica , garlic skin.

- Evil eye talismans on you and your home.

- Sound cleansing at doors and windows.

-  Carry protective crystals - Black Tourmaline, Obsidian, Onyx, Hematite, Smokey Quartz.

-  Use protective oils/salves (honourable mention to my Evil Eye repellant Spell Oil)

- Ground your nervous system! Evil eye feeds on dysregulation, rest matters.

If you know who it is sending you negativity, you may want to either bind them, banish them, sweeten them, or perform a cord cutting. Every situation is different depending on who you're working with.

If you're feeling game enough, find a deceased fly (do not kill flies) and perform a return to sender using it. 

Flies are not here to scare you. They’re here to highlight disturbance, interference or attention that shouldnt belong to you.
