The pentagram is a five pointed star with a long and varied history, and its meaning changes depending on the culture, religion or magical tradition using it. In modern Western occultism, its five points are commonly associated with the five elements: Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Spirit.
When worn or displayed upright, with a single point facing upward, it is commonly interpreted as Spirit sitting above the four physical elements. Because of this, the upright pentagram is often associated with balance, protection, harmony between the elements and spiritual consciousness.
When reversed, with two points facing upward, its symbolism changes. Within some Western occult traditions it represents the physical or material world placed above Spirit, and can be connected with instinct, embodiment, descent, inversion and the more primal aspects of human nature.
There is no single universal meaning attached to the pentagram, and its interpretation depends heavily on the tradition and intention behind its use.
